What's in A Name?

In Act II.ii, how does Juliet say she feels about Romeo's name? (Remember: your response should be based on the text and should include supporting evidence). Do you think this would be the way a 21st-century female (in love) would describe a name? If so, why? If not, how do you think she would actually describe her (intended) partner?

In act II.ii juliet explians how she feel about Romeo's name. Julet feels as though only his name is keeping them from marriage. As she states "Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,And for that name, which is no part of thee" as a human living in the 21st-century i dont think a female in love now-a-days would base their love off a name. I belive this because peolple base thier love off of looks and personality. A name really isn't important, as along as you know you are with the one love.

  2. This is Sean and the way Juliet feels about Romeo's name is that she wishes it was not his name. she wishes that because her family the Capulet's are sworn enemies for a a unknown reason. So she would not be aloud to be with him as well as he. But if his last name was of other letters and meaning it would be perfectly fine for the two to be together. it is different in the 21 century. people are not to be separated by name. at least none that i know of. and that is how Juliet felt about Romeo's name.

Romeo and juilet met and fellin love at first sight. later juilet came to rilize that he is a montague. romeo explained how she felt about him and how his name was the only thing thatwas keeping them from marrage and being happy they already had the love all they wanted was to be married and live piecfuly .i dont think that now in the 21-centry people would based there names on love i dont think this because people love each other because of feeling and how much they care about a person.

The words spoken by Juliet were:
My ears have yet not drunk a hundred words
Of that tongue's utterance, yet I know the sound.Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague?

My comment: Juliet wished that Montague and Capulet were no different. She thinks that love shouldn't be spoken of or judged of by you're last name. Romeo told Juliet that he loved her and that his last name is what kept him from loving in marriage. in the 21 century, people don't base their names on love. They love each other without marriage, today they have children without marriage.
    Thank you for reading...

in the act Juliet basically said that to her a name dose not mean nothing to her also she said that she would give up her name for romeos love and marriage.I don't think in the 21 century girls/boy don't care about last names or anything as long as there is love between the two people then nothing can stand in there way. but if it is about the last name then the would most likely say the same thing as Juliet but in a more common way for example street slang

The thing that Juliet says about Romeo's name is that she wish he can change his last name or she can switch her last name. the reason for this is because they families had a bad history together when they werent even born yet.

No i do not think this would be a 21st centurty relationship because if two people just meet each other, They should get to know eachother first before they do anything. But they just start kissing like 5min right after they meet eachother.

i really dont know how her intended partner would be like

In Act I.ii Juliet said verbatim "My ears have yet not drunk a hundred words
Of that tongue's utterance, yet I know the sound.Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague? " She said that she would be with Romeo but should would have to change her name to a Montague or Romeo would have to change her name to Capulet. But other than that she really loves Romeo, It was love at first sight.
In the 21-century , It doesn't matter what's your last name, as-long as you love the person.

In Act II.ii Juliet states "you'd still be yourself even if you stopped being a Montague"(no fear Shakespeare version)she evidently doesn't care whether he is a Montague or not. she truly loves him for who he is. A 21st-century female could care less about what their partners name is. They wouldn't describe it in any way because today your name doesn't have any affect on the love you share for someone.

    JULIET:
I haven’t heard you say a hundred words yet, but I recognize the sound of your voice. Aren’t you Romeo? And aren’t you a Montague?"

In Act II Juliet states :

If his name was that of another Romeo would still be Romeo and she would still love him. But she was telling her self that if his name was changed or her name was changed then they could be together. I think that a 21st century girl wouldn't make a big deal with a name because its the person themselves that actually matters. I think they would describe their partner based on their personality or actions.

  11. what juliet feels about romeos name is that its the name of the Capulets enemies son which can keep them away from marrige.to her its just more than that. hat she feels is that she doesnt care what his name is the only thing is that love cannot seperate them because of a feud. in the 21st century a girl would describe their partners name like that because no matter if they are sworn enemies it was love at first sight that brought these two together and nothing will stand in their way. this is how juliet described romeos name.

Juliet feels that Montague is just a name . It is not part of Romeo & does not define him . If he does not change his , he will change hers . This is the only thing stopping their love / marriage . Though she knows of his family & knows he is thine enemy , she still seeks his love . Thinking less of his last name . . .

Juliet feels that Romeos name is just a name. Since there parents are enemies why couldnt Romeo have a different name and be a Capulet in that way they can be together without all the problems. They loved eachother to much to be seperated by there parents. I dont think the 21st century female would judge on the names of the partner they love. A name is just a name now a days they judge off looks and personality.

  14. (this is Jemar Steele) Within the story, Shakespeares "Romeo and Juliet", Juliet stated that, "My ears have yet not drunk a hundred words of that tongue's utterance, yet I know the sound.Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague?" She goes on to explain how he could change his name or she would willingly change her name just so they could be together without the intrusions that their last names could cause in their relationship. However, a twenty-first century female would not care for the name of their "significant other" but for the way that he/she acts and cares for them.

In Act II.ii Juliet states "you'd still be yourself even if you stopped being a Montague"
In the twenty-first century women don't care about your last name or your name at all. They care about loving you and not impressing nobody else. You should be the one happy and in love. Not someone else telling you who you need to be with or in love with and who you are going to marry, because at the end your the one ending up being hurt or happy.

Its me Alex Rivera and with Romeo's name, Juliet feels that because of his name, it has caused alot of tension for her. She still loves him and he can be his normal self but if he could change his name, she could love him more and she would stop being a Capulet. All he has to do is change his name and he could have her in exchange. A name is just a title someone has, it has nothing to do with them. Even if he had a different name, he would still be the same man she loves. Just like Juliet said, a rose would still smell as sweet even if it were called something else. I personally think that this is a way a 21-century female (inlove) would a name basically because it's true. Whether you say something now, its never gonna change no matter what year or century your in. A name is a name, a name is a title. Something to be called by, nothing else. A name, and the way someone is, is two completely different things and to me, that will never change. Romeo's name is the enemy, not who he is.

  17. in actII juliet says romeo's name is just a name. she believes that they shuoldent be away from each other just because his name is Montague and she is capulet. i tink that if that was to happen now in this century she would of not went out with romeo, because she would relize that her life was at state. this is chayannes view.

  18. i think Juliet didn't like the fact Romeo had a different last name simply for the fact it meant they could not be together. all because Romeo's last name was Montague and her's was Capulet. the detemined couple thought otherwise and wished that a simply last name did not , in this case, make one not love his/her true lover. but in present day this is non-existant opposed to there current 16th century. by: Zacharie Theodore

  19. Juliet feels as though Romeo's name is what is keeping her from truly loving him because she knows that he is a Montague and is supposedly her sworn enemy. For instance,in the text Juliet states "It’s only your name that’s my enemy. You’d still be yourself even if you stopped being a Montague." All she really wanted was for Romeo to be someone who wasn't a Montague because she knows that having a relationship with one will inevitably bring problems.

I believe that this wouldn't be a way a 21st century woman would describe a name because people aren't really judged by their names now. For example, a woman wouldn't automatically like someone because they have a name that they think is adorable because that would just be senseless. Most people at this time would most likely describe their partners by their appearance because that's the first thing they see when meeting someone, despite the fact that appearance is not what really matters.

"Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,And for that name, which is no part of thee"

In my opinion , Juliet understands that in her families eyes because she is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague there love is non-exsistent, but Juliet see's it differently , she feels that his name cannot define who he is . . . it's just a name. I think a 21st century women in love would look past the name of her parner , because they name of a person means nothing if your in love with them.

It’s only your name that’s my enemy. You’d still be yourself even if you stopped being a Montague. What’s a Montague anyway? It isn’t a hand, a foot, an arm, a face, or any other part of a man. Oh, be some other name! What does a name mean? The thing we call a rose would smell just as sweet if we called it by any other name. Romeo would be just as perfect even if he wasn’t called Romeo. Romeo, lose your name. Trade in your name—which really has nothing to do with you—and take all of me in exchange.
In my opinion,i think that a 21st century women (inlove) would look beyond the other's name because it'll be meaningless to them for the fact that their inlove with the partner. Usually people would most likely describe their partners by their appearances so I dont think the 21st century female would judge on the names of the partner that their inlove with because a name is just a name so today they judge only looks and personality and since that's the first thing they see when meeting someone, who cares of the fact that their appearances is not what necessarily counts in a person!

  22. Juliet feels that Romeo's last name is the only "problem" with them not being able to get married. Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague, these two families are enemies so it would be wrong for them to get married. Juliet thinks Romeo changing his name to Capulet or she would change her name to Montague would be the only way they would be able to get married.

In the 21-century,people do not base their feelings for someone or their opinions on someone's last name. They would also not say they are going to marry someone the same day they meet them. On the other hand,in some countires there are relationships like Romeo's and Juliet's where people are preparing for marriage at young ages.

In ActII.ii Juliet feels that if Romeo didnt have the name he had ( Montague ) then there wouldnt be a problem. With Romeo being a Montague and the rivilary with the family of Montague's she knows that there is no way possible that they can be together. Peacefully that is. In the text Juliet states "'Tis but thy name that is my enemy." In other words its only his name thats her enemy. If Romeo wasnt a Montague and Juliet wasnt a Capulet they would be able to live happily ever after but being that the families have this histoy of hating each they cant be in love.
I dont think a 21-centuary female would feel this way because now-a-days no one cares about who doesnt like who in the family. If you like that person then you can be with that person. Back then Juliet's father could have killed her because she was disobeying him by seeing a Montague, but you cant do that now.

Based on what Juliet stated, which is quoted above,i feel that although she is aware that who a person is does not change even if their name does, she still feels she would be more comfortable loving him if he wasn't a Capulet. Therefore, if either of them were to 'change their names' or change whether they are a Capulet or a Montague, their plan to spend their lives together would become more natural and realistic to her. Also, i think that in today's society, people wouldn't describe their lovers name just as she does. This is so because although people may judge others based upon their name,in the case of love the name is little or of no importance. However in Juliet's situation, she is right for wishing Romeo was not born an enemy.

  26. I think that Juliet realizes the foolishness between the family feud here. She finds Romeo's name like shackles keeping her from loving him to an extent. She finds it awkward that she ans he are the children of hatred who find love. She wants him to figuratively change his name or release bondage and set them free.
Today, we are in a free country and we are free to love anybody. So we aren't so contientious about a lover's name. To us it may be like a bluebird singing a sweet melody. But to Juliet, it is a bird bound within as it wishes what life could be if it were free.

  27. i think juliet doesn't care about what is going on between her family and the montagues she only wants to be with Romeo, her love. she is going to love him no matter what. He is a Montague but that is just a name and she doesn't care about the name, she cares more about her affection towards him. she said that, a name can change because its just a name and he can therefore change hers from capulet. Itis obvious these two will go the extent to be together ever since they layed eyes on each other. The name doesn't really define who Romeo is so she will love him still.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think that Juliet did not care at all bout Romeo's last name at all. She felt like it was just a name, not a arm, leg, or anything else on the male body. She Didn't even care that much about her name aswell. The name did not matter to either of them because the rage wasn't in their part it was in their parents. Juliet just wanted to be with Romeo and if changing her name or even Romeo's to do so, then so be it.
I think that a woman today would probably do the exact same thing. It should not matter what your name is when it comes to love. So why does even matter that Romeo and Juliet's parents do not get along. A woman in this time probably would not care either because it is just a name, nothing else.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that Juliet was expressing her feelings and explaining that she dos not care about Romeo's name or title, she only cares about their future together, if they so choose to have one. I think this is a very unshallow way to express feelings of love for someone especially knowing the situation between hers and his famalies.
I do not think a 21st century female would describe feelings for someone in this manner because these are different times and there are different customs & I believe 21st females are more shallow and judgemental than Juliet was.

  30. What Juliet means is that she loves Romeo either way, if he was or wasn’t a Montague. It’s just that she hates the contradiction of the families’ rage against each other and her loving Romeo. And that if he gets rid of his surname/ family’s name, he would have Juliet instead. She also says that the name has no partake of Romeo himself, as a person.
“So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, and for that name, which is no part of thee take all myself."

Yes, I would think that a girl that is in love of the 21st century would describe a name practically the same way as Juliet has because basically, she’s using common everyday descriptions to say what she is feeling. This is that, he is his own self and not just his family’s name. She is describing him as a person and not label him under his family’s name. She sees beyond just that, she sees him for his character.

A 21st century relationship doesn't matter what your name is. The thing that should matter to you is the person that you are going out with. People now a days people go out with the person they like and not with their name.

  35. Juliet had many thought running through her head and one feeling that made her heart race. Though she knew she loved Romeo she felt pushed away from him due to his name. Juliet knows that a name doesn't make a man any more or less of a man. For instance when she compared a person's title with that of a flower, a name wouldn't make the rose's fragrance any exceeding or amiss. What Juliet really wants it for Romeo to give up his name and in exchange to have her.

Now a days, i believe that this could still possibly happen, just not as tragic as what occurred in this play. Though family feud aren't as dramatic as they're presented to be in, as in "Romeo and Juliet," it doesn't mean that being with someone is simple. There are still fights going on, maybe not because of the last name but more like his/her "title." So yes, i do believe that a female from this century would have troubles in a relationship because of a name.

  36. Juliet was trying to say that a name was meaningless. She meant that Romeo didn't have to be a Capulet for her to love him. Even though Romeo and Juliet were from two different househoulds they still felt a strong connection of love. It shouldn't matter if they were "enemies" or not.
A woman in this time period wouldn't speak this way because they should go with their parent's bidding, not with their own personal beliefs.

In this section she describes how the only man she loves is the son of the only man she hates and how she saw him to early and found out who she was to late and how love is a monster for making her fall in love with her enemy's son. No I believe that this is not how 21st-century female (In love) would describe a name because now in days people really in love do not care about titles or last names they care about the emotions that draw them to the person. Also now in days people in lobe allow there feelings to make there decisions for them not anything else. i believe that a 21st-century female (In love) would describe her partner as someone she intends to spend her life with without letting anyone stand in her way. Also she would describe her partner as someone to be there for her and would not care about names or titles the person has.

  38. In the 21st century people don't base their relationships on names. They base on personalities and the way that person treats them. Juliet has a passionate love for Romeo. Juliet explains that if he wasn't a Montague they could be together. She was saying whats in a name it will still have the same touch and smell. She says if Romeo changes his name he will still be the same person.

  39. In this play, Juliet faces an obstacle. She found out that the love of her life's last name was Montague which meant a dead end. Montague is the name of her families' rivel. She had a strong beleif that a person's last name shouldn't matter between two people that love each other, the last name of a person shouldn't be able to hold them from loving each other. She just couldn't understand that their love was impossible because of a small thing such as a last name.

In today's world a female would probably have done the same if she was in Juliet's place. My reasons being so are because after meeting the one he/she loves a name doesn't matter but yet at the same time it's all he/she can think about, since it's the only thing standing in his/her way. An other example is that now a days most parents would let their kids make there choices.

In act II.Juliet Capulet explains how she truly feels about Romeo's name “My ears have yet not drunk a hundred words of that tongue's utterance, yet I know the sound.
Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague?” Anyhow I do feel that Juliet doesn’t care about the issues between their families because of what she said "you'd still be yourself even if you stopped being a Montague”. There are many different aspects, but based on my knowledge it doesn’t matter what you look like, what your last name is, etc.
Personally I believe a 21-century female does not act like that, however there are various different ladies and we are not all the same. The way Juliet kissed him at first sight was not lady like; I mean at least she could have said hi or something.
